Here are some of the rules of napkin etiquette:

Napkins exist and are used when setting the table for hygiene purposes: for wiping the mouth and hands, protecting clothing against stains, etc. So feel free to use a napkin, even a very beautiful one.
Wait for the master of the table to unfold his napkin, then unfold yours.
If the napkin is too big and falls out of your knees, fold or twist it to the size you want.
In decent society, it is not customary to make sudden moves during a banquet. You should not aggressively shake a napkin by unrolling it. Also, it is not advisable to wipe with a cloth, like a towel, to wet your mouth carefully.
Do not rush to unwrap the napkin, wait until they bring a dish.
If you need to leave the table, leave the napkin on the chair or to the left of the plate. After the meal, put the napkin also to the left of the plate, but in no case in the plate.
The napkin should be on your lap. Not at the waist, not at the collar, but at the knees.
